Zack is a 1st Class SOLDIER, the ex-boyfriend of Aeris Gainsborough and a great friend of Cloud. He is the person who actually accompanies Sephiroth to the Mako Reactor at Mount Nibelheim and meets tifa (Cloud was there too but as a simple shinra guard). After the discovery of his past Sephiroth went mad and destroyed Nibelheim, Zack fought against him but he was severely injured, Tifa was injured too, they were about to die but Cloud came to save them (well, to save Tifa, poor, poor, Zack). He managed to kill Sephiroth but, after that, Zack and Cloud were taken for experiments (hojo I hate you! è_é) and injected with Jenova cells and subjected to Mako to try to make them as strong as Sephiroth, who was dead. Zack didn't react to the treatment but Cloud did. After they had escaped (well, after Zack had escaped, taking Cloud away), Zack was killed trying to protect Cloud and Cloud assumed his identity and even his memory (It was zack who give Cloud an outfit as his btw ;)).
From the manual:
Aeris is young,
beautiful, and caring, as well as a little mysterious. She first met Cloud while
selling flowers on the streets of Midgar. She joined him soon after. She has amazing
healing abilities. There seems to be a little love triangle going on between Cloud,
Tifa, and herself.
From the guide:
A beautiful 22-year-old,
Aeris is a bright spot in the middle of a dark and dreary town. While selling
flowers near AVALANCHEs first target, Aeris life was forever altered
after a chance meeting with Cloud. Because of her mysterious background, Shinra
has persued her for mot of her life. Now she must fight against those who would
enslave her and destroy what she holds most dear.
Aeris is the closest character
final fantasy seven has to a dedicated magic user. He physical attacks are fairly
weak, but she possesses great skill with Materia and its various forms.
Due to this odd balance, you should put her in your back row and load her down
with materia. Let Aeris devote her energies into spell casting while her team-mates
concentrate on inflicting physical damage. This also takes advantage of her defensive-based
limit breaks
