From the official site:
In the centuries before Kains birth, the land was protected by an oligarchy of sorcerers known as the Circle of Nine - guardians sworn to serve and protect the Pillars of Nosgoth.
But the Circle was infiltrated by an enemy, and Ariel the Balance Guardian was cruelly murdered. Her assassination sent psychic shockwaves throughout the Circle, and in their derangement the remaining sorcerers turned their powers to dark purposes, poisoning the land with their sorcery and abandoning the Pillars to stand like silent, decaying sentries. [Indeed Ariel assassination drove her lover Nupraptor, one of the pillars, mad and for vengeance, he used his powers to attack the other guardians' minds to drive them crazy NdN]
Into this dying world Kain was born. The son of an aristocratic Nosgoth family, he lived the privileged life of a nobleman, never realizing his undiscovered destiny that he was marked from birth as Ariels successor, fated to take her place as the Guardian of Balance.
Ignorant of his destiny, the ambitious but directionless Kain roamed the land during one fateful journey, he was ambushed by brigands and murdered, cruelly impaled on his assassins sword.
Plucked from the brink of oblivion by the Necromancer Mortanius, Kain awakened in the underworld, still transfixed by his enemys blade. Tormented by his hunger for vengeance, and heedless of the spiritual cost, Kain recklessly accepted the Necromancers offer of revenge and rose from his tomb to discover that he had been resurrected as a vampire.
Kain quickly tracked down his assassins and exacted his bloody revenge. With his vengeance and hunger sated, he sought only a cure for the vampiric curse that afflicted him. Guided by Mortanius and the specter Ariel - Kain hunted down each of the corrupt sorcerers now poisoning Nosgoth. Only with their deaths could the Pillars be healed and only by restoring Balance would Kain be released from his vampiric curse.
During his journey, Kain discovered and claimed the Soul Reaver, an ancient soul-devouring blade, and stumbled across not so coincidentally a time-streaming device created by Moebius, the Guardian of Time.
Against the counsel of the ancient vampire Vorador, Kain found himself embroiled in human events, caught in a bloody battle between Ottmars Army of Hope and the ruthlessly advancing armies of the Nemesis, from the north. As the tide of the battle turned, Kain used his only means of escape the time-streaming device, which swept him nearly 50 years back into Nosgoths past.
Hoping to alter the course of Nosgoths history, Kain assassinated the young King William the Just, who would become the diabolic tyrant known as the Nemesis. After sating himself on his victims blood, Kain returned to the present only to discover that his murder of the beloved King had ignited a genocidal war against vampires, led by the Time-Streamer Moebius, himself.
Upon his return, Kain witnessed the future that he had wrought and the final, triumphant act of Moebius cold-blooded mob. Vorador, the last of Nosgoths vampires, is guillotined and his head held aloft for a cheering, bloodthirsty crowd leaving Kain the sole surviving vampire in Nosgoth.
As his quest brought him full-circle, Kain confronted the destiny that Mortanius and Ariel had hidden from him that he was the Balance Guardian, and that only by sacrificing himself could he restore the Pillars. Ariel presented him with a final, climactic decision sacrifice himself to heal the land, but ensure the extinction of the vampires; or refuse the sacrifice, and seal the worlds corruption.
Revolted by the scheming of the human sorcerers and alienated from his former humanity, Kain chose the latter path opting to rule the world in its damnation rather than commit himself to oblivion. This apocalyptic act completed the Pillars destruction; the mighty columns toppled as Kain sealed their ruinous fate.
Kain concluded with the epiphany that Vorador was right that vampirism is not a curse but a blessing. That vampires are dark gods whose duty is to thin the human herd. With intentional irony, Kain established the ruined Pillars as the symbolic seat of his new empire, and the unrestored Balance Pillar as the base of his throne. In an act of calculated blasphemy, Kain raided the ancient tomb of the Sarafan, a fanatical order of warrior-priests once sworn to eradicate the vampires plaguing Nosgoth. From the desiccated corpses of these long-dead knights, Kain raised his six vampiric sons to become the Lieutenants of his fledgling empire.
But the Pillars, Kain ultimately realized, were more than just a human edifice the health of the Pillars was tied inextricably into the health of the land. With the Pillars left unrestored, corruption seeped slowly into the land like a poison, turning his empire into an irredeemable wasteland.
When Raziel, first among Kains Lieutenants, revealed his latest evolution a pair of batlike wings Kain responded with an act of seemingly egotistical sadism. Tearing Raziels newly fledged wings from his back, he ordered Raziel to be cast into the Lake of the Dead, where he would burn forever in the Abyss.
But like Kain before him, Raziel was saved from the brink of oblivion by a mysterious benefactor an ancient god dwelling in the depths of the Abyss, who transformed Raziel into a devourer of souls, and released him back into the world in order to take his vengeance.
Kain however, had other plans for Raziel. Seemingly unsurprised by Raziels miraculous return, Kain baited Raziel across Nosgoths ruined landscape, leading to their final confrontation in Moebius long-abandoned Chronoplast chamber.
Driven by the fatalistic visions revealed in Moebius chambers, Kain activated the time-streaming portal that would propel him and Raziel centuries into Nosgoths past. Free will, Kain argues, is an illusion; their fates are intertwined in ways that Raziel has not begun to fathom
Raziel, is an ancient vampire, one of Kains' first brood. Nearly as old as Kain himself, Raziel had achieved a highly evolved vampire state, and acted as one of Kain's lieutenants.
Rather than evolving slowly over time, vampires experience periods of accelerated metamorphosis, actually entering cocoon-like stages from which they emerge transformed. Raziel committed the ultimate blasphemy, having emerged from his last cocoon state more evolved than any other vampire - including Kain himself. He alone, out of all Nosgoth's vampires, evolved into a winged state - a bat-like membrane stretched from his back to his fingertips, allowing him the power of flight (which no other vampire possessed).
For this unforgivable transgression, Raziel was condemned. On Kain's orders, the other lieutenants hurled him into the depths of Nosgoth's deepest lake.
Falling endlessly into the murky depths, Raziel's skin burned with white-hot fire as he tumbled to the lakebed, blue fire shooting from his eyes and screaming mouth. As he settled to the bottom, much of his flesh burned away, the world shifted around him, and the pain receded - he had fallen to the deepest watery pit of Nosgoth, into the very seat of the Underworld.
The mysterious god of the Underworld revived Raziel, and in resurrecting him transformed him into the Soul Reaver, his angel of death and retribution. As a fledgling Reaver, Raziel resurfaces in Kain's Nosgoth, galvanized by a hunger for revenge, and a thirst not for the blood of humans, but for the vampires' apostate souls.
"Revenge.
You
Can Almost Taste it.
You desire vengeance. You lust for blood. You're Kain.
Your enemies killed you in the ultimate act of treachery. But through the blackest
of sorcery, you have returned - as a vampire. For sustenance, you must feast upon
the blood of the living. For revenge, you will exact the darkest of fates upon
your murderes."

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (Action-adventure \ PC - PSX - DC \1999)
From Manual\SR site:
DARK GODS
A millennium has passed since Lord Kain
set his capital in the ruins of the Pillars and began his conquest of the world.
His first act was to recruit a cadre. Dipping into the underworld, Kain snared
six souls and thus birthed his lieutenants, of which I, Raziel was one. We, in
turn prowled the twilight of purgatory building six legions of vampires to pillage
Nosgoth.
The destruction of the major human kingdoms was inevitable. Within a hundred years, humanity had been thoroughly domesticated. To be sure, there remained some feral humans scattered across the hinterlands, clinging to their hopeless holy war to rid Nosgoth of 'the vampire scourge'. They were tolerated. They made existence for the fledglings more challenging.
After the taming of the humans, our real work began; shaping Nosgoth to our will. Slaves built a shrine around the Pillars. A monument worthy of our new age. Worthy, of our dark renaissance. Huge furnaces were constructed to belch smoke into the sky, shielding the land from the poisonous effects of the sun. Never had the world known such a time of beauty. However, we grew bored.
We allowed the lesser vampires, the remains of the legions, their intrigues. They provided amusement and spice to an increasingly uninspired court. As faction fell against faction we bet upon the outcome. We helped and foiled plots at our whim. We were the Council and Lord Kain, our only master.
RAZIEL
The humans think it is a poison
of the blood that makes us what we are. Fools, the blood only feeds the bodies
we live in. To create a vampire, one must steal a soul from the abyss to reanimate
the corpse. It is the body that demands the blood sacrifice; our souls gain their
advantage from the powers of the underworld. As we matured, our earthly bodies
evolved into a higher form. Through The Change, we assumed the power and nobility
of the Dark Gods. With each Change, the trivial affairs of vampire and man held
less interest.
Always, it was Kain that would Change first. After the master had experienced a new gift, one of us would follow, in a decade or so. That is, until I had the 'audacity' to evolve before my master. I was gifted with wings. And for my impertinence I was damned.
To us the touch of water is agony; it burns our flesh like acid. My punishment was to be cast into the Lake of Lost Souls - the execution ground for traitors. As my brethren heaved me into the air I could see the bemused expressions on their faces. The transitory thrill of something new. Then the pain began. Melting, twisting, burning, falling. A new experience indeed. Time. I have no concept of how long I fell. Only that there was an end to the fall and through the pain I heard a voice. At first, I thought it merely the echoes of my own tortured mind, but I grew to understand that it was more.
Something primal. Something desperate. Something righteous. Something ancient.
THE ELDER
The Elder explained much to me. It told me of creation, of death, of souls and of hunger. For eons the Elder fed upon the souls of Nosgoth. Until, Kain's empire of vampires deprived the Elder of sustenance. For centuries his hunger grew and festered in this place.
The elder offered me redemption; if I would stalk the material plain slaying my former brethren, I would have the chance to avenge myself against Kain.
How could one refuse?
Now I stalk the ruins of Nosgoth seeking to destroy my creator.
Cast down to the material world, the
mysterious entity 'Raziel' seeks vengeance for betrayal by his master: Kain. Cursed
to stalk the dark realms of Nosgoth, he must slay his undead brethren; only then
can he absorb their souls for the energy he craves. Moving between the spectral
and material plane, Raziel must negotiate puzzles, overcome traps and defy blood-chilling
enemies to reach his goal - the final battle with Kain!

Sorry, I don't own the english manual yet. Anyone can email me the introduction?
"My Armes are all slain. My castle lies in ruins. My enimies have taken everything from me, all my wealth and power. But they could not kill me. I still walk the earth, weak but alive. They have taken everything but the beating of my undead heart. Now they will learn of fear, these mewing babies who thought they could destroy me. I shall regain my powers, and I shall come to them in the night. And my visits shall not be kind."
Blood omen 2 takes place four hunderd years adter the original legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, in which the vampire Kain chose to rule the world of Nosgoth in its damnation rather than die for its salvation.
Since the events of that period in time, Kain had become the powerful commander of an army fizated on ruling the land of Nosgoth. In response to his ascension to power, another faction knows as Sarafan appeared in the land. The sarafan are a group of humans led by a mysterious and potent figure, know only as the sarafan lord. Determined to wipe out the vampire Scourge, the Sarafan clashed with Kain's army over decades of blood-stained and infernal conflict. Eventually, this war ended when the sarafan triumphantly defeated Kain's army. In the final battle, the Sarafan Lord defeated Kain in mortal combat, stripped him of his macabre blade, the Soul Reaver, and tossed him off a cliff into an abyss of apparent demise.
Yet, this was not to be so. Pure and true wickedness of Kain's Ilk cannot be expunged so easily.
After more than 200 Hunderd years drifting in a void of unconsciousness, Kain groggily awakens in a strange place with almost no memory of his former self. Another vampire named Umah, had taken him in and revived him to health after Kain's little recollected and deadly battle with the sarafan Lord. He is weak, and has lost most of his former formidable powers. Worse still, his trusted weapon, the soul Reaver is missing. As Kain regains presence in the waking world, umah begins to fill him in on the events of recent past, while fragments of Kain's shattered memory return.
Umah recounts to Kain that when his torn body wa found, it was revived and brought to the capital of Nosgoth, the city of Meridian. In the two centuries that Kain has been dormant in hibernation, the sarafan have risen and taken fascist control over most of Nosgoth. Far from the great empire they once embodied, the vampires now exist only as a small resistence to the Sarafan, called the Cabal, in Meridian. It is into this resistance that Kain emerges and is now, by brotherhood and lust for vengeance, a part of. The ambition of the resistence is simple; slay the Sarafan Lord, and the Sarafan Order will crumble.
Because the Sarafan Have no knowledge Kain's existence, he is the perferct agent to locate and kill the Sarafan Lord. Kain agrees to help the Cabal for the time being, until which time he sees fit to follow his own agenda, and seek revenge at all cost...
