§ Valen ShadowBreath §

Ok, this page has plenty of spoilers, beware!

Valen ShadowBreath is one of the new henchmen you can hire in Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark. He is a faithful and loyal follower of the seer of Eilistraee (goddess of moonlight and the stars, of mercy, forgiveness and redemption) who saved him from the curse of his blood; for Valen is a tielfing, an half demon, raised to fight. And his demonic blood makes him desire to kill, to destruct, and if encouraged, can obliterate his conscience.

"The Blood Wars are the ages-old conflict between the demons of the Abyss and the devils of Baatezu. We have battled so long and so ferociously that the War is now part of our blood." [...] "I was... recruited into those battles." He looks away from you, his eyes taking on a haunted cast. "For years I fought in the Outer Planes as something less than a soldier... I was a beast." [...] "My infernal masters encouraged the demonic blood that was within me. I was beholden to it... I reveled in it, and was desperate to please my masters with each opponent I slaughtered."[...] "The Blood Wars made me into the warrior I am," he nods to his armor and weapons. "Though it meant nothing to me. I was a mindless soldier, no more." [...] "There were times I wanted to die. There were times I tried to die. But I never did."

He was born in Sigil, and he can't even remember his age. His mother was a prostitute and when she died by the hand of a merciless demon mistress he was thrown on the streets and started stealing, until a demon lord, Grimash't, saw the demon's blood within him and scooped him up.

"The demoness disliked mortal frailty." He frowns deeply at the memory. "And disliked me even more. I was on the street, homeless, within an hour of my mother's death." "Sigil is a merciless place, even for children. I was but one of many who starved most of the time, death but a moment away."

Then his days as a slave fighter started. Until a drow priest summoned him and his master army by a spell to fight against the seer and her followers and he met her. He started to wondered about himself, realizing WHAT he was. When his master sensed this change, he was tortured for a long period but at last he was able to escape Grimash't and find the seer. She helped him on the path to regain his umanity and he decided to follow her and stay by her side, helping her with the rebels she leads against the Valsharess. Grimash't came after him but he managed to kill his former master.

"There was nothing in me that was human, and that meant less than nothing to me. Until the Seer found me." [...] "We were banished back to the planes, but the memory of the Seer stayed with me. It haunted my dreams." Valen closes his eyes, shuddering. "For the first time in decades, I began to remember the life I once had."

"Possibilities" All the Valen Endings. ***SPOIIIILEEERSS AHEAD O.O***

If Valen betrays you in the battle against Mephistopheles and dies:

"A victim of his own demonic taint and his inability to escape the powerful influence of the arch-devil Mephistopheles', it came as little surprise that Valen betrayed you in the end. He died in battle as he would have wanted, but his name was soon forgotten in the wake of your greater victory..."

If Valen betrays you and survives the battle:

It is said that Valen explored many places in Faerun after parting ways with you. In many ways, after betraying you, he became little more than a lost soul, doomed to wander alone forever, desiring nothing more than to be felled in battle. In time, he left Toril behind and returned to the planes, the call of the Blood War still pounding in his veins...

If Valen doesn't betray you but DOESN'T love you or you refuse him:

The bards sing of Valen adventuring with you for a time, though the two of you eventually parted ways. The tales of his exploits throughout Faerun are many, but always the tiefling remained alone and apart from those he protected. Some claim that he found his way back to Sigil where he became an important figure within the city's powerful factions, unifying some and destroying others. Valen always remembered you as a friend and companion, however, someone with whom he had made a personal connection. He returned to you on numerous occasions, accompanying you in your exploits when he was not already embroiled in his own...

If you force him to love you (shame on you!):

Denied of his true freedom by your command, Valen abandoned his dreams of exploration and instead served your whims slavishly to the end of his days. Though he professed to love you, the claims rang ever more hollow until he was but a shell of a man, a shadow of his former self. He died in his sleep, old and rheumy well before his time, his love of battle's glory long since faded into the monotony of a wasted life...

If he loves you:

Valen escaped the loneliness of his blood at last, finding in you that other part of his soul that he had always missed. Though the two of you were not always together, you were also never truly apart, and more often than not you were inseperable during the greatest of your adventures. Even when the two of you returned to the planes, he claimed he no longer felt the call of the Blood War within his veins. His heart, he told you, was full enough with you alone...
